It is now May and we have decided that the main goal for this month is to sit, relax and sip! The foliage is full with fresh green leaves, the shops have opened back up and the streets of downtown Asheville are starting to bustle. Posana Featured Wine
Many of us consider the birth of great Californian wines to begin in the 1970’s with the arrival of the likes of Robert Mondavi, Ridge, and Chateau Montelena, but it actually surfaced much earlier than that in the first half of the 20th century with wineries like Mt. Eden Vineyards. This family-owned vineyard officially dates back to 1943 with roots and history spanning further back to the year 1900 and its original French custodian, Paul Masson. Set out to craft single varietal wines in a time where field blends dominated the market, Mt. Eden Vineyards cemented their vision with plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a few acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. Nestled just south of San Francisco, the vineyards that yield this estate bottling of Chardonnay have been meticulously tended with the understanding that great wine is, in fact, made in the vineyard and only minimal intervention should be employed in the winery. Our offering of the 2018 vintage underwent full malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels before aging two years in bottle to reach maximum potential. All of this care translates in the glass to an incredibly balanced and elegant expression of Chardonnay; one that calls true to its Burgundian roots in purity of fruit but pays homage to its place on the Californian Central Coast with notes of tropical pineapple and white flowers. This harmonious combination is maintained by a backbone of rich creaminess that supports yet proves to not overwhelm the wine. This is as close as you can get to pure bottled liquid sunshine – perfect to welcome us into spring.
Bargello’s Featured Wine
Tatomer Riesling ‘Steinhügel’ 2017 | Central Coast, California $13 glass/$50 bottle
This month we feature a wine made from our Sommelier’s favorite grape varietal: Riesling. While most people know this wine to be cloying and overly sweet and without flavor, the opposite could not be more true in fine examples of Riesling. Originating in Germany, some vines have made their way around the world to produce stellar expressions of this electric varietal; and some landed in California that have eventually found their way to the base of this Tatomer bottling. Using the oldest planted Riesling vines in California, Graham Tatomer applies his rich passion and experience with Eastern European wine to this sunny, yet cool representation. Bursting at the seams with a laser focused array of tropical fruits, the bracing backbone of minerality carries the wine through its elongated finish on the palate. This Riesling breaks down the stereotype of its sweet predecessors by exuding a crisp, dry, free of sugar glass of pure deliciousness. The perfect patio sipper in this warm weather, we are incredibly excited to finally be able to pour this wine by the glass.
Award-Winning Wine Lists
Both Posana and Bargello hold distinguished awards from Wine Spectator. Posana was Asheville’s only independent restaurant in 2014 to be awarded Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence. They have continued to achieve that level of recognition through 2018 when they kicked things up a notch and earned Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence, once again to be the only independent restaurant in Asheville to achieve this level of recognition. Posana’s cellar focuses on sourcing wine from small production vineyards with a focus on organic, sustainable, or biodynamic growing and production principles. Posana has maintained Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence consistently since 2018. Recipients of Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence offer a wine list displaying “an excellent breadth across multiple winegrowing regions and/or significant vertical depth of top producers, along with superior presentation. Typically offering 350 or more selections, these restaurants are destinations for serious wine lovers, showing a deep commitment to wine, both in the cellar and through their service team.”
Bargello, opening in October of 2019, launched with a magnificent wine list curated by Sommelier Emily Dunnaway and went on to receive the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator in 2020. We look forward to sharing our collections with you!
