Bernard Gaucher Brut ‘Prestige’ Champagne 2015

It’s December – time to pop some corks! This month we’re featuring a small production grower Champagne from a family-owned estate in Arconville, France, just southeast of Reims. The Gaucher family farms the land, harvests the grapes, and produces the wine – a relatively rare phenomenon in Champagne, where many Champagne producers mostly source grapes from grape growers to make their wines.
The Gauchers grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and their 2015 Brut Prestige is a blend of primarily Pinot Noir with just a touch of Chardonnay. Vintage Champagne isn’t produced every year – it takes a stellar growing season for a vigneron to decide to use only that vintage’s harvest in his or her Champagne. This wine is bright, with really lovely aromas and flavors of green and yellow apples, pears, and a touch of bread dough. It’s wonderfully bubbly on the palate but still gives you all the complexity you want from a vintage Champagne. Enjoy with seafood, vegetable dishes, or on its own!
